There is little that makes us happier than spending a morning or afternoon on the bike, fresh air in our lungs and the sun shining over the rolling hills of the Auvergne. Domaine Bonneblond is located in a fantastic cycling region: quiet country roads, endless views and picturesque villages turn every ride into an adventure.
Recently, even the top riders of the upcoming Tour de France raced through this region during the opening stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, starting and finishing in Montluçon. The Tour de France itself will also pass nearby around July 14, when the iconic Puy-de-Dôme near Clermont-Ferrand is climbed during what could be a decisive stage.
We’d love to share a few of our favourite routes — perfect for relaxed rides of 40 to 50 kilometres through gently rolling hills, with the occasional climb (after all, you are in France!).
🚴♀️ Route 1: Lac de Sidiailles – A Refreshing Reward
One of our absolute favourites is the route to the beautiful Lac de Sidiailles, about 20 km from the campsite. You cycle past sunflower fields, forests and charming hamlets.
The lake is the perfect place for a break or picnic — don’t forget your swimwear, as a refreshing dip is hard to resist!
Distance: approx. 45 km | Difficulty: moderate | Elevation: light to moderate, with a fun descent and a steady climb back towards the lake
🧺 Route 2: Market Day in Châteaumeillant – Friday Morning
Another favourite ride leads to Châteaumeillant, a charming town that comes alive on Friday mornings during the local market. Fresh cheeses, warm bread and seasonal fruit — it’s a joy to wander around before getting back on your bike.
Along the way, you pass typical French villages, and if you're lucky, you’ll find a local bar-tabac to stop for an Orangina or a cold beer on the terrace.
Distance: approx. 42 km | Difficulty: easy to moderate | Tip: leave early for the market.
🌊 Route 3: Along the Canal de Berry – Peace & History
For a flatter ride (yes, they exist!), cycling along the Canal de Berry is a great option. Near Saint-Amand-Montrond, you can follow parts of the old towpath — peaceful cycling with views of the water and lush green surroundings.
Combine it with a stop in town — the perfect place for a drink or a crêpe on a sunny terrace.
Distance: approx. 48 km | Difficulty: easy | Highlights: lots of shade and tranquility
🏞 Route 4: Small Villages & Big Views
If you simply feel like cycling without a fixed plan, there are endless possibilities. From Bonneblond, you can head towards Le Châtelet, Touchay or Saint-Maur — villages where time seems to stand still.
Often, you won’t see a single car — just a tractor or a curious cow. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Bourbonnais hills and sometimes even the distant Massif Central.
A great tip: stop for a refreshing drink at the ever-friendly bar-tabac in Saulzais-le-Potier.
