In France, you travel a little back in time. For fifteen euros, you can still enjoy a three-course lunch. And if the drive takes a bit longer – oui, correctement – that’s part of the charm: a journey through medieval villages, rolling hills and peaceful landscapes.
Lunch here is not just a quick bite, but a daily ritual. A plat du jour where even the local workers take their seats.
From simple village cafés to elegant châteaux — these are our favourite places to eat, chat and enjoy without rushing.
1. Le Juju Café & Halte de Goëlât – Simple, local and authentic
📍 Saint-Désiré – 3 km | 5 min drive / 30 min walk
In our own village, you’ll find two true local classics. At Le Juju Café, you sit among locals (if it’s open 😉), enjoying a daily dish and a glass of wine. Just a bit further is Halte de Goëlât, a truckers’ restaurant with a menu designed by their son — a Michelin-star chef — but at local prices. Delicious.
No reservation needed, but arrive early: the kitchen closes after 2 pm.
2. La Petite Auberge – English charm in a French village
📍 Chazemais – 20 km | 20–25 min drive
A charming auberge with a touch of English hospitality, run by two warm-hearted owners. Relaxed atmosphere, homemade food and always a friendly welcome.
We love coming here — and always order the Sticky Toffee pudding.
Reservation recommended, especially on weekends.
3. Auberge de Loye-sur-Arnon – Honest food, fair price
📍 Loye-sur-Arnon – 25 km | 24 min drive
A small auberge where simplicity meets quality. Regional dishes, friendly service and no unnecessary fuss. Just good French food.

📍 Domérat – 27 km | 25 min drive

5. Chez Sam – Simple and local
📍 Saint-Amand-Montrond – 30 km | ± 30 min drive
Right in the heart of town. Not fancy, but that’s exactly why it works. Classic dishes, a glass of rosé and a view of village life passing by.
6. L’Auberge du Bois d’Arpheuilles – Charming and authentic
📍 Arpheuilles – 38 km | 43 min drive
A cosy auberge with a daily menu and carefully prepared dishes. A place where locals gather — true Auvergne dining.
Reservation recommended.
7. Château de Sarzay – Lunch with history
📍 Sarzay – 55 km | 48 min drive

A classic French restaurant with rich flavours, butter and wine. Just as it should be.
